Shay Mitchell is not here for any Instagram haters spreading negativity about her pregnancy.
The Pretty Little Liars and You star is expecting a baby girl with her partner Matte Babel, and she hasn’t been shy about sharing her pregnancy on social media since her initial announcement in June. From bikini pics to boat selfies, Shay has proudly put her pregnant body on display on the ‘gram, which inevitably has opened the gates to some not-so-nice commenters. Fortunately, the actor doesn’t seem to be letting the inevitable shamers and haters get to her; in fact, she’s taken it upon herself to personally reply — with a sense of humor.
In one post, Shay is seen posing in a two-piece bathing suit alongside pal Alex Merrell. Most of the comments are complimenting the actor on her glowing skin and stylish beachy vibes, but one user decided to inquire: “How?? Is she married?”
Shortly thereafter, Shay chimed in to say: “Not married, can you believe it still happened?!!” (Yes, it’s true, people can have children regardless of relationship status, and no one deserves to be shamed for how they go about this stage of life.) Similarly, when another person asked Shay about her “baby daddy,” the 32-year-old simply responded with the shrugging emoji.
The comments didn’t stop there; when Shay shared a snap of her lunch table (the contents of which included prosciutto, cherry tomatoes, olives, and what looks like crispy bread), one person jumped on the sight of the meat, advising: “You shouldn’t eat that,” adding the pregnant emoji for emphasis. In response, Shay said jokingly: “Can I still have the wine tho?!”
According to the American Pregnancy Association, there are certain foods that pregnant people should avoid or limit, including uncooked meat, certain soft cheeses, and cold deli meats. (The APA also notes that there’s no amount of alcohol that’s deemed to be safe during pregnancy, but we’re pretty confident Shay was kidding with her retort.) It’s also probably safe to assume that Shay doesn’t need (or want, for that matter) advice from random strangers on the internet, and it’s never OK to shame someone online — celeb status or not. Here’s hoping Shay continues to find ways to shrug off the haters, cause she’s definitely getting the last laugh.
